New Eurostar UK Terminal opens at Amsterdam Centraal

The terminal is located in the former Amstelpassage; one of the five tunnels that run from south to north at Amsterdam Central Station. The passenger arrives via the main entrance on the city side of the station, subsequently passing through baggage check and the Dutch and British border controls into the waiting room. The waiting room concludes the interior concept; with the balance and relationship between earth and sky, characteristic of train transport and inspired by the relationship between Dutch and British landscape paintings from the Golden Age. The passenger continues through the waiting room to eventually ascend the staircases to the platform located in the IJviaduct.

Dynamic lighting in the floating ceiling, which can respond to various scenarios during the different parts of the day and during the boarding process with projections of clouds, is one of the most striking elements in the interior concept. The use of different textures, colours and materialisation contribute to a pleasant and clear travel experience.

Visually calm spaces, comfortable acoustics, accessible design and various types of ergonomic furniture offer a comfortable and inclusive travel experience for all travelers. The use of robust and circular materials seamlessly connects with the sustainable nature of train travel and the sustainability objectives of Eurostar and the Dutch Railways.

With all of this, the new UK Terminal is a remarkable example of adaptive reuse and design excellence in a challenging environment that has had to meet a range of complex criteria and requirements from various stakeholders. The project is not yet fully completed, and in the second half of this year more waiting space with commercial facilities will be opened.
