In the presence of Annick De Ridder, Flemish Minister of Mobility, Public Works, Ports and Sport, Sports hall Groot Schijn in park Groot Schijn Deurne was officially opened on 9 December. The project was commissioned by GO!/City of Antwerp and designed by ZJA Architects & Engineers in collaboration with Archiles Architects, in cooperation with Studie 10 engineering consultancy, and built by contractor Vanhout.pro. Earlier, ZJA—together with OM/AR—also designed the Sports centre Sportoase Groot Schijn in the same park, which brings ice rinks and swimming pools together under one roof.
Bas Symons (architect, ZJA Architects & Engineers) says: “We are extremely proud of this exemplary project of sustainability and shared use, housed in a compact yet surprisingly spacious building. A striking feature is the layered façade of perforated metal, with an ochre-coloured structure behind it. The dynamic roof and façade lines connect harmoniously with the surrounding park, allowing the building to blend naturally into its environment.”
In addition to a large sports hall, the building also accommodates a multifunctional movement room and two gymnastics halls. Thanks to the glass façade, there is a lively visual interaction from the movement room and gymnastics halls with the campus square—designed by Stramien—and the Groot Schijn park.
The building is largely self-sufficient in terms of energy and contributes to responsible water management. In short, it is an inviting and future-oriented sports facility where movement, social interaction and health take centre stage.
