Joris Veerman (architect ZJA Architects & Engineers): “The bridge crosses the canal and Vaartstraat, creating a connection between the new Suikerpark development and the old city. In this way, a safe alternative for cyclists and pedestrians has been established. The bridge subtly weaves between the monumental row of trees along the canal while passing Vauban’s historic fortifications. This location does not call for an iconic design: the bridge has been reduced to its essence, with slender 80 mm solid steel columns giving it an almost floating character.”
Blending into the landscape
The eastern ramp has been carefully integrated into greenery, creating a natural buffer with nearby apartments. New trees, seating areas, and a wadi for rainwater collection further embed the bridge into the urban fabric.
The long, folded ramps preserve existing landscape elements, while the winding path offers changing views of Veurne’s rich historic surroundings.
A safe and attractive alternative
The new crossing provides a continuous route completely free of intersecting traffic. It forms an appealing alternative to the busy route along the station, giving cyclists and pedestrians the sense of a journey through time across Veurne’s landscape and its UNESCO heritage.
To ensure safety and security, the bridge was designed with a gentle gradient, eliminating the need for elevators. Elevators are prone to vandalism, increase maintenance costs, and contribute to unnecessary light pollution.
