By order of MDC we designed a large catering facility at the new soccer stadium of Sporting Lissabon (Portugal). The building has the shape of a ball with a diameter of 45 meters and a total floor area of 5000 m2. The building accommodates two restaurants, a sports cafe and a large supermarket.
Underneath the building there is a parking garage, which has the same round shape as the ‘Foodball’. The shape of the roof of the garage is such that it allows daylight to enter the underground space. The facade is made of steel frames and glass. The exterior of the facade is fitted with revolving strips to regulate daylight. The strips on the frames are closed and made of aluminum; the strips on the glass plates are open and made of glass.
