N206 ir. G. Tjalmaweg nominated for the Rhineland Architecture Prize

The asphalt is barely dry and already the design of the N206 ir. G. Tjalmaweg is in the running for a prestigious prize. The rebuilt provincial road between Leiden and Katwijk is on the longlist for the Rhineland Architecture Prize (RAP). Architectural studio ZJA worked on the design of the Tjalmaweg together with BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects.

Ode to the Roman past

As well as an improved link for traffic, the Tjalmaweg is an ode to the Roman past and gives a prominent place in its design to regreening and connection. With the utmost care, we have gone beyond merely designing a road, since its sunken position visually connects the worlds either side of the roadway and makes them into pleasant places to be. We are tremendously proud that the project has been nominated for the Rhineland Architecture Prize.

New connecting road as part of a high-quality new landscape

The Tjalmaweg was officially opened on 6 May 2023. With its remarkable design, the rebuilt road adds a unique piece of green space to the Dutch traffic network. The walls of the sunken road are clad with strips of wood, against which grow 38,000 climbing and hanging plants. They will give the road a natural green look and promote biodiversity. Beside it is a long strip of parkland with several green places to enjoy and a huge diversity of plant species. Under the Torenvliet Bridge is another pleasant place to spend time.

Kustwerk Katwijk winner of the first RAP

In 2015 our project Kustwerk Katwijk, on which ZJA collaborated with Ballast Nedam, Royal HaskoningDHV and OKRA Landscape Architects, won the first ever Rhineland Architecture Prize. Presented every two years, the prize was established to reward and stimulate noteworthy architecture in the Rhineland region.

Jury Rhineland Architecture Prize

This coming month the jury will study the selection of twenty-five nominations for 2023, before announcing the shortlist on 6 September. After that, residents of the region will be able to vote for their favourite design via the RAP website. The winner will be announced on 11 October.
