Parametric Design for Brick Surfaces

Creating Brick Patterns

We are conducting research on how we can create brick walls with a pattern or structure in the brickwork.

A pattern emerges by varying three critical parameters:

- Size and position of the brick
- Rotation of the brick
- Used bond

We wrote software that translates a grayscale picture into a bond, using the three variables. This custom software is written in Processing, creating output obj.-files for 3D-rendering and PDFs for cutting the models which were laser cut from MDF.

A shows a Stack Bond with purpose-made bricks in three different sizes

B represents a Stretcher Bond with rotated standard Dutch Brick Size bricks

C is as B, but as Stack Bond

D Cross Bond, bond stones cut in 3 sizes (full, 3/4 and half brick)
