Definitive contract for expansion of N206 Europaweg Leiden

The team of Boskalis, architectural studio ZJA and BoschSlabbers landscape architects has been given the definitive contract for the N206 Europaweg in Leiden, part of the RijnlandRoute. The project involves not just the widening of the N206 Europaweg but the laying of paths for cyclists and pedestrians, the redevelopment of the Lammenschansplein and the replacement of two bridges. ZJA and BoschSlabbers were earlier responsible for designing the N206 Tjalmaweg project, which was nominated last autumn for the Rijnlandse Architectuur Prijs.

N206 Europaweg

The N206 Europaweg will have two lanes of traffic in each direction. A cycling superhighway with underpasses will also be built and two bridges replaced, the Lammebrug, which can be opened for boat traffic, and the Trekvlietbrug. A new bridge will be built, the Knottepolderbrug, and the Europaweg will be given a bus lane.

Collaboration

Michel Heesen, project architect at ZJA, says, "After completion of the N206 Tjalmaweg, we look forward to a fresh collaboration with BoschSlabbers, Boskalis, the Province of South Holland and the municipality of Leiden. This promises once again to be a project in which architecture and landscape flow together in a remarkable way.”

Stijn Koole, partner and landscape architect at BoschSlabbers, says, “Over the coming years we will make a new gateway to Leiden. To achieve this, a situation will be brought about with two temporary bridges. This will provide the maximum space and time for us to create a high-quality landscape into which the carefully designed new Lammebrug and Trekvlietbrug will be integrated."

Attractive and safe route

Ashley North, alderman for Climate, Mobility and Finance in the municipality of Leiden, says, “For Leiden the N206 Europaweg is one of the most important parts of the RijnlandRoute. Soon anyone approaching Leiden on the Europaweg or from Voorschoten will be able to drive on smoothly. In the new arrangement, this route will be a good deal more attractive and safer for cyclists, too, making it a great alternative to arriving by car. The creation of a bus lane makes the project complete in my view.

RijnlandRoute

The RijnlandRoute is made up of three projects. The new N206 Ir. G. Tjalmaweg came into use last year. The N434, which includes the Corbulotunnel, is expected to be opened to traffic in July this year. The N206 Europaweg is the last element of the overall project to be tackled.
